An Introduction to Etylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) Roofs

A transparent material with a very long name, Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene roof systems seem to be popping up more and more.  The system, already used more widely in Europe, seems to be gaining foothold in the United States, particularly in buildings with blast considerations.  This presentation will provide an introduction to the system in general as well as discuss relevant factory and field testing experience gained during construction of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency New Campus East project as well as the new Anaheim Regional Transit Intermodal Center.  

 

Learning objectives:

1. Understand some advantages and disadvantages as compared to glass skylights,

2. Gain a basic understanding of a typical ETFE construction,

3. Understand an appropriate laboratory testing approach, and

4. Understand relevant field quality control and quality assurance observation and testing.
