The Art and Science of Matching Historic Concrete

Please join BEC-DC and the Association for Preservation Technology (APT DC) for 2016's kick-off event at Gensler's DC office. 

 

Matching concrete sounds simple, but there are many factors that affect color. Whether your project is historic or a contemporary, this presentation will outline materials and procedures that are important to understand when matching is important.

 

Amy Lamb Woods, an engineer with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger will talk about the fundamentals of concrete materials, how cementitious materials effects the concrete color, how to use color measurement technology in developing a matching mix design, and other helpful tips when it comes to matching.

 

Amy's background combines architecture, historic preservation, and materials engineering. From the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign she holds a B.S. in Architectural Studies, an M.Arch with a focus on Historic Preservation, and an M.S. in Civil Engineering Building Materials with a focus on concrete and cement chemistry. Ms. Woods has more than 17 years of experience in the field of historic preservation and forensic engineering of materials and construction systems. She has been involved with many types of projects such as façade investigations, repair and rehabilitation projects, and materials analysis. Ms. Woods is on the Board for the Association for Preservation Technology International, a Director for the International Concrete Repair Institute Chicago chapter, on the Easement Committee for Landmarks Illinois, and is an instructor in the Historic Preservation Building Diagnostics class at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
