Wharfed Tour: Examining the Unique Enclosures

at 1000 Maine Ave SW and 975 7th ST SW

Description:

 

Take an in-depth tour of two stunning building enclosures at the Wharf.  At 1000 Maine Ave SW, a waterfront office building, terracotta is effectively integrated into a unitized curtain wall system. Challenges with the weights of the various components and attachment systems will be discussed, along with how logistics were managed. At 975 7th St SW, a single building that shares two hotels, the building was originally created as a window wall structure, then redesigned to curtain wall. Once again, logistics were creatively managed, along with the sheer complexities of multiple materials, including glass, metal and brick.

Vicente, Frank, and Christopher were principal members of the design team for 1000 Maine and 975 7th St., Parcels 1 and 5, at The Wharf in Washington, DC.

Learning Objectives:

​

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

• Explore how terra cotta can be safely integrated into a curtain wall design;

• Discuss and gain insight into design and engineering techniques for combining completely different building types into a single structure;

• Explain how to combine multiple materials effectively to create a building that is technically sound and visually appealing; and

• Discuss logistical concerns and outcomes for fast-track buildings in close proximity.

Schedule:

4:00 p.m.  Meet at main entrance of 1000 Maine. We’ll proceed to the penthouse where we’ll have an overview of both projects and a look at the beautiful views from this lofty perch.

4:30 p.m. We'll explore the rooftop of 1000 Maine, then proceed to the base, where we’ll observe important aspects of the enclosure design. 

5:00 p.m. We'll rendezvous at 975 7th St SW in front of the Canopy By Hilton Hotel and take a good look at the enclosure details and notable features.

5:30 p.m. We’ll end the tour at Whiskey Charlie, on the rooftop at 975 7th St SW. Our presenters will be there to answer questions and offer further discussion. Beverages are also available.
